F&D interview on Hippotamus Rex

Friday 10th December 2005 midnight-2:00am Hippotamus Rex with Ronan Hamill

Check out Hippo Rex for a chat with deNorthwode about the new release Worship the Grit, hip hop in Adelaide, spirituality, playing live and his offsider Funkwig.

About
This Adelaide based production team have been collaborating with acts all over the country & the world. Renowned performers such as Spikey Tee, Abstract Rude (Abstract Tribe Unique), Resin Dogs, Kataylist, Brothers Stoney, Koolism, The Herd, and Mnemonic Ascent have all benefited from the F&d touch as well as many of the underground Australian acts yet to break the surface.

Separately, the two have forged formidable reputations:
Funkwig is a highly respected bass player who is the musical mastermind behind Social Change (alongside Mc JayBurn). As well playing over the years in many Adelaide bands including Planet Groove & Phat Albert. & at the ARIAS with Candice Alley.
deNorthwode aka B.V.A makes up one third of the legendary Mnemonic Ascent (alongside
Dj Ransom & Raph Boogie). Mnemonic Ascent have toured extensively across the continent,
performing alongside such artists as J5, Company flow, Rodney p and Skits, Resin dogs &
Downsyde to name a very few.

As B.V.A. he is a highly regarded Aussie rapper, considered a veteran of the scene by his 20’s.
As deNorthwode,  his extensive production credits include Brad Strut, Shin-ki-row,  Brothers Stoney and 2dogs.  deNorthwode has long been a regular dj around town known for playing a surprisingly diverse selection of party music always appreciated by the ladies and getting crowds rocking all over the country.

Together, F&d have seen their tracks released on compilations such as River city Project, and more recently Sub-Urban Files (hydrofunk). Look out for their recently completed remix of the new Resin Dogs single “Gunshot Dub”.

F&d’s performance credits include support for Grand Master Flash, Jurassic 5 and The Resin Dogs. Not content to just flex the funk in the studio, F&d translate into a powerful force when performing live. Featuring amazing musicians from around the country the live line-up includes Gilli Akitson On Drums, MC Jim-Blah, Tim Hartwig on guitar as well as Funkwig’s assured bass and deNorthwode/B.V.A’s schizophrenic sampler work and vocals. A feast of other special guests can be expected to join this highly mobile unit, making it an ensemble of local talent every show.

‘Worship the Grit’ is the debut album from F&d –(Funkwig and deNorthwode) The Adelaide duo have been hard at it for the last 3 years producing for the likes of Mnemonic Ascent ,Lazy Grey and the Resin Dogs.  This release has put a whole new spin on the genre ‘Aussie hip hop’ with groundbreaking instrumentals laced with fresh original raps.

On this album F&d have collaborated with the likes of Katalyst, Resin Dogs and Dj Ransom.  BVA shares the Mic with some new upcoming rappers including A Love, Jim Blah, Mr Monk (Culture Connect); and also more established artist’s Brothers Stoney and L.A underground icon Ab Rude.  Gritty beats, live instruments, together with slick honest rapping is the F&d formula, ‘Worship the Grit‘ is the next step stemming a list of highly acclaimed albums from independent label Crookneck.

For radio play, the first single lifted from this release is Track 6 “Soul Sensation” (Feat. Mr Monk).

Look for it in stores, out now through Crookneck Records/Stomp.
