In 2019, Nigerian singer-saxophonist Femi Kuti joined local champions of Afrobeat The Public Opinion Afro Orchestra to play the fourth iteration of Beasts of No Nation, the annual PBS event paying homage to the irrefutable king of Afrobeat, Fela Kuti.
Named after Fela’s final studio album, Beasts of No Nation is a poignant reminder that decades later, his music remains as relevant and powerful as ever. The firstborn son of Fela, there is no other artist on the planet more fitting to pay tribute to the Afrobeat tradition than Femi. As the prince of Afrobeat, Femi has preserved Afrobeat’s political pulse and bridged the gap between contemporary soul and modern hip-hop, as well as ensuring the continuation of Afrobeat for future generations.
PBS and Flight 1067 to Africa with Stani Goma presented the 2019 edition of Beasts of No Nation, performing two concerts at Max Watt's House of Music on the last weekend of August 2019. We are delighted to revisit this exceptional event by broadcasting excerpts from the concerts, played across two Sunday afternoons on Flight 1067 to Africa.
Tune in to Flight 1067 to Africa from 3pm on September 19 for Part 1, and on September 26 for Part 2 of Beast of No Nation 2019.
