The sixth annual Belgrave Survival Day will again on Australia Day celebrate the Survival of Indigenous culture since 1788. This year event will present an exciting lineup of contemporary and traditional indigenous performers.
There will be great musical performances form indigenous artists .Benny Walker and Lady Lash. Benny Walker, born and bred in Echuca, is one of Australis most promising new indigenous talents. His music is a blend of soul, blues, reggae and acoustic folk, which tells of the trouble, strife and wonder of everyday life.
Lady Lash has been nominated for a 'Deadly Award' and was a Victorian state finalist for the 'One Movement Festival' (AIMS) Perth. Lady Lash is a talented and engaging hip hop artist, performing her unique interpretation of Urban Blues with a Gypsy flare, she is a strong Indigenous Kukutha woman. With an LP in production and an Ep 'Pearl' out now, she created a unique breed of music with her live band of gypsies.
The day will also include music and activities by and for children. HICSA, an Indigenous Children’s choir from Healesville will be performing hip hop.Gnarnayarrahe Waitairie and his daughter will be doing storytelling and dance workshops. Jindi Worobak, whose members are all indigenous youth will also be performing traditional dances of the Wurundjeri.
The event is organised by a committee of volunteers and generously funded by the Yarra Ranges Council. The event also received a grant from YouMeUnity which is the national conversation about updating our Constitution to recognise our first peoples and define equality for all Australians.
The event highlights the indigenous perspective of the 224 years of European occupation of Australia, and celebrates the survival of indigenous culture through live music, storytelling, traditional dance and craft.
