Sun 16 Mar 2014

On 16 March 2014 between 1 and 5pm Multicultural Arts Victoria and the Warrior Spirit Art Collective, supported by the City of Yarra and the Victorian Multicultural Commission, present the annual Black Harmony Gathering - a colourful and vibrant celebration of local Koorie and emerging refugee cultures at the Fairfield Amphitheatre under the gum trees by the Yarra River, in the heart of Wurundjeri land.

People of all cultures are invited to come together in a spirit of harmony and reconciliation to enjoy the gathering. The only event of its kind, Black Harmony Gathering annually celebrates the UN’s International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination and national Harmony Day. A beautiful afternoon of free music and dance with Indigenous, vegetarian and cultural delights, creative children’s activities and cultural ceremonies. Participating artists include Yirrmal & the Yolngu Boys, Kutcha Edwards, Taqi Khan, FLYBZ, Jackie Jackie & The Blackies, Koori Youth Will Shake Spears, Special Crew and The Deans with Illana Atkinson.

This year the gathering will be accompanied by the Black Harmony Forum, held from 6:30-8:30pm on Wednesday 19th March at the Reading Room in the Fitzroy Town Hall, Napier St Fitzroy. The forum, entitled ‘From Convicts to Boat People: Colonisation, Migration and Historical Hypocrisy’ will feature speakers from Indigenous and newly-arrived migrant and refugee backgrounds, as well as refugee advocates.
