This week on PBS we’ll be featuring two world premiere broadcasts of recordings made at the 2024 Melbourne International Jazz Festival (MIJF). On Tuesday November 26 Mike Gurrieri will broadcast the very personal suite Tooni from MIJF First Nations artist-in-residence Bumpy. Tooni traces Bumpy’s learnings of language and reflects on her travels on Noongar Boodja, tracing the footsteps of her family and Elders. Joined by members of the Australian Art Orchestra, Bumpy performed Tooni to a packed house at Arts Centre Melbourne on October 18. Tune in to Mystic Brew with Mike Gurrieri from 9am on Tuesday November 26.
On Saturday November 30 Andrew Young will present the world premiere of a new suite of works from composer/flautist Erica Tucceri, winner of the 2024 Take Note initiative. Take Note is a series of programs that recognizes and nurtures excellence amongst female and GNC instrumentalists working in jazz. Each year the winner of the Take Note initiative receives a commission to compose, arrange and present a substantial work for an expanded ensemble. For this year’s Take Note commission Erica Tucceri brought 11 musicians to a sold-out band room at Howler in Brunswick and PBS is delighted to have been on-site to record the concert. Tune in to Jazz on Saturday from 9am on Saturday November 30 to hear this epic new work, exclusive to PBS 106.7.
PBS is delighted to be a community media partner with the Melbourne International Jazz Festival and we’d like to thank the team at the MIJF for making these broadcasts possible. We’d also like to thank Bumpy, Erica and all of the musicians, engineers Jem Savage, Lachlan Wooden, Jake Martin and Paul Maybury, as well as Aaron Choulai and the team at the Australian Art Orchestra.
