It has been nearly a quarter of a century since singer-guitarist Joey Burns and drummer John Convertino founded Calexico, named after the Californian town situated on the Mexico-US border.
In 2003 they released their 4th album, Feast of Wire, it proved to be a breakthrough album for the band and stands as one of their finest.
This incredible S5L performance is generous in length and was recorded shortly after the album’s release.
It evokes beer drinking in a dusty border bar as it shifts effortlessly through the bands signature sound of country, jazz and mariachi all held together with perfect strings, accordion, trumpet, and pedal steel.
PBS’ premier alt-country announcer Myles O’Neil-Shaw reflects:
"Calexico is a wonderful band to experience live, having wowed Australian audiences every time they visited. We are lucky to be able to share with you their PBS Studio 5 performance, which is from one of their earlier visits back in 2003, around the time of the release of their fourth album Feast Of Wire. "
We are lucky indeed. Keep the morning of Saturday 31 October free and join Myles for this very special live session with Calexico on 5ft High & Rising.
Studio 5 Live is proudly brought to you by Mountain Goat.
