This week's PBS Feature Album is the debut self-titled album by female collective The Cloud Maker.
With this exciting release, the genre-defying group invite listeners on a sonic journey that taps into mystical traditions, transcending boundaries of folk, world, and experimental music. Inspired by legendary figures and timeless myths from diverse cultures, The Cloud Maker's music channels a unique blend of enchanting melodies and powerful storytelling.
Their debut album builds on this momentum, cementing their place as one of the most dynamic and boundary-pushing acts in the local scene today. Featuring Te Kahureremoa Taumata’s Maori Singing Treasures, Aviva Endean’s otherworldly clarinet, flute and electronics, Freya Schack-Arnott’s virtuosic cello, Maria Moles' bounding drums, and Sunny Kim’s evocative vocalisations, their inaugural record transports listeners deep into the pulse of a divine etherealm.
The Cloud Maker project is a celebration of empowerment through female creativity, highlighting the strength, talent, and artistic expression of women. Fittingly, they draw inspiration from powerful feminine figures in mythology, like Mayari, the Filipino goddess of the moon; Freya, the Norse Goddess of love, fertility, battle and death; Princess Bari who is worshipped by Korean shamans and is told to have resurrected her parents with the water of life; Miriam, the Jewish prophetess who inspired women into song and dance after crossing the red sea, and who carried a miraculous well as they wandered through the desert; The Selkies, mythological Irish creatures who can transform between seal and human form; and Hine Pu Te Hue, the goddess of the gourd who swallows the storm.
