by The Menahan Street Band
The Menahan Street Band have gone from strength to strength with their 2nd album release. With this LP it is clear that they have been getting into some serious sweet soul and they have harnessed the power of the Minor key to full effect. The LP is full of sweet laments that uplift but make you feel melancholy all at the same time; just listen to the pleading horns on the tittle track "The Crossing" for a perfect example of this. They have a fantastic ability to leave space on their tracks, they use restraint and pare it back to the essentials so nothing about this album feels forced or over worked. With "Everyday a dream" Tommy Breneks guitar and the organ sing to each other in a perfectly harmonised duet as the drums lop along and the horns ooze. "Keep coming back" picks up the tempo a little with sublime Minor key horn stabs, it conjures up Time Square in the 60's; a sleazy strip joint cut hopped up on downers. The Crossing is an LP you can put on and enjoy from start to finish and then play all over again.
