With a sound big in its ambition and almost scary in its scope, depth and range, the moniker Big Scary is not entirely misleading for the duo of Tom Iansek (guitar/vocals/piano) and Joanna Syme (drums/vocals). Formed in 2008, Big Scary makes music that defies easy categorisation, moving effortlessly between howling, fuzzed-out garage rock, intricate, pastoral piano and sublime rainy-day ballads.
After a couple of well received eps, which led to heavy airplay for the singles The Apple Song and Falling Away on community radio, in 2010 Big Scary launched the first of four seasonally themed, limited-edition eps, a perfect showcase for the duo’s vital, dexterous sound. This first seasonal offering Autumn, birthed the infectious radio hit of the same name, confirming that the Four Seasons Project was firmly on its way. In late 2011, the inexhaustible duo will release a full length lp of new material. In the meantime, we can continue to expect the unexpected from Big Scary, a duo of uncommon gifts whose only constants seem to be their capacity for invention, their desire to keep moving forward.
