by Pantha du Prince and The Bell Laboratory
“Elements of Light” is an unusual pairing of German electronic music producer Pantha du Prince (Hendrik Weber) and the Norwegian experimental ensemble The Bell Laboratory. Essentially one long work broken into 5 movements, the album features a symbiotic combination of contemporary beats and electronics with massed acoustic percussion – most notably a 50-piece bronze bell carillon.
Collaboration is nothing new for Pantha du Prince, having previously created re-mixes with artists as diverse as Animal Collective and Phillip Glass. Rather than a re-mix project however, “Elements of Light” is a genuinely collaborative composition and realization that owes more to late 20th century minimalism than it does to Prince’s roots in house and dance music. “Elements of Light” by Pantha du Prince and The Bell Laboratory is out through Rough Trade Records.
