Building on Multicultural Arts Victoria’s successful Emerge programs from various locations around Victoria, Emerge in the North is the first of its kind in the Whittlesea region.
The program boasts a number of fresh local acts, including traditional Aboriginal dancers Koori Youth Will Shake Spears, Sudanese Dance, a Syrian youth Marching band, a riot of colour from Cook Island dancers, and a number of community choirs.
“We’re also profiling well-known Melbourne artists to inspire local talent, like the high-energy percussion group Tumbarumba, who’ll have the whole crowd dancing to Brazilian rhythms; and the big sounds of African Intelligence, an eight piece ensemble who will close the night with exhilarating afrobeats, reggae and salsa.”
Emerge in the North festival is FREE, indoors and the perfect mid-winter warmer for families and friends.

Lamine Sonko & African Intelligence
Fresh from a very appreciative audience of Womadelaide 2017, African Intelligence is an 8-piece ensemble led by Senegalese singer/dancer Lamine Sonko, sharing with you a musical report from the roots of afrobeat, reggae and salsa. From funky baselines and swift guitar riffs to the smooth groove of a message with meaning, this band is a colorful line up of Australia’s world musicians. Presenting their own fusion of contemporary and traditional african rhythms, their music is exhilarating, infectious and dares you dance!

Kutcha Edwards
Kutcha Edwards is a high achieving survivor of the Stolen Generations of Aboriginal Australia. He is a living example of someone who has conquered many obstacles in life to become an ambassador and advocate. As a singer/songwriter for much of his career, Kutcha is a natural story teller who will often accompany his spoken presentations with a song that exemplifies the points being made. Kutcha’s aim is to educate and inform, and in his words, to “drop a pebble in a pond and watch the ripple effect”.

Niruththa Indian Fine Arts
Named Melbourne’s official Natya Rathna (Jewel of Dance) in 2003, Niruththa trained in Indian Classical Dance at the prestigious Fine Arts Academy in Bharathachoodamani and has toured all over the world in professional troupes. Now based in Mill Park, Niruththa runs a dance company focused on nurturing and training young artists. The group’s graceful classical dancing and sumptuous traditional costumes enrapture audiences in a masterful and disciplined artform that has been preserved for centuries. In 2003, Niruththa was awarded the Victorian Multicultural Commission Excellence Award for Community Arts. Her dance company performs regularly, including Plenty Ranges Arts & Convention Centre.

Tumbarumba
Tumbarumba five piece all Percussion band features improvised Brazilian and fusion beats that are known to get a crowd dancing in minutes. Tumbarumba is inspired by Brazil’s Percussion instruments, alongside Timbales and ambient Congas. They have been collaborating and performing for over 12 years entertaining audiences at Festivals, Entertainment Centres, and public events and in Clubs. Band members are: Mark Grunden on vocals; Neda (on REP and various Metallics); Julian Goyma on Kit; Salvador Persico on Surdos and Multi Brazil Percussion; and Luis Poblete on Congas and Multi Percussion.
