In the next instalment of Mallard Movies, PBS' Flight 1067 to Africa presents a screening of Finding Fela! – a documentary about legendary Afrobeat pioneer, Fela Kuti.
Wednesday 26th August at the Spotted Mallard, 314 Sydney Road Brunswick. FREE entry and special treatment for PBS members.
Stani Goma from Flight 1067 to Africa will give a short introduction to the film at 8:15pm and the screening starts at 8:30pm. Get down early for some fantastic food served up by the Spotted Mallard's kitchen. Just to sweeten the deal, PBS members receive a free pot of Thunder Road beer or glass of Cake wine on entry! Members also receive a 10% discount on food and drinks all night, so don't forget your membership card!
A little background about the film:
'Finding Fela tells the story of Fela Anikulapo Kuti’s life, his music, his social and political importance. He created a new musical movement, Afrobeat, using that forum to express his revolutionary political opinions against the dictatorial Nigerian government of the 1970s and 1980s. His influence helped bring a change towards democracy in Nigeria and promoted Pan Africanist politics to the world. The power and potency of Fela’s message is completely current today and is expressed in the political movements of oppressed people, embracing Fela’s music and message in their struggle for freedom. Finding Fela was directed by the Academy Award winning director, Alex Gibney.'
