PBS' Homebrew and Mallard Movies present a screening of Buried Country, the re-launch of the accompanying book and a Q+A with author/filmmaker Clinton Walker. Wednesday 25 March, Q+A 8:15pm | Screening 8:45pm | Free entry
Long before it was commonplace for Aboriginal people to take centre-stage as artists, writers, choreographers and directors, it was country music that first gave the original Australians a voice in modern Australia.
To some, black skin and country music may be unlikely bedfellows. But from early stars like Jimmy Little, Dougie Young, Auriel Andrew and Harry and Wilga Williams to Vic Simms, Bob Randall, Bobby McLeod and Isaac Yama, Aboriginal country music is a very real phenomenon. It's a long and rich tradition that’s evolved to the present-day through Roger Knox, Troy Cassar-Daley, Kev Carmody, Archie Roach and Ruby Hunter. These are Australia’s ‘sorrow songs’, part honky tonk, part bush ballad, all Aboriginal. Singing black stories in a way white people could also understand, country music was not only a salve for its own dispossessed people, it became common ground, before anything else, in a divided Australia. Buried Country is the story of this remarkable tradition.
Before the screening of the documentary, author/filmmaker Clinton Walker joins us to re-launch the accompanying book, which is back in print in a new expanded and updated edition, and to chat with Homebrew's Maddy Mac about the entire project.
Dinner is served from 7pm, the Q+A between Clinton Walker and Maddy Mac begins at 8:15pm, and the screening starts at 8:45pm. This is a free event and all are welcome AND to sweeten the deal, PBS members receive a free pot of Thunder Road Beer or glass of Cake wine and a 10% discount on food and drinks, so don’t forget your membership card!
Bookings are essential. RSVP to samanda@spottedmallard.com, with your time of arrival, number of people in your party and whether you'll be eating before the screening. First in best dressed. Seating is limited.
