by Courtney Barnett
How To Carve A Carrot Into A Rose in the sister EP to I've Got A Friend Called Emily Ferris, being released individually as EPs or jointly as the album A Sea Of Split Peas. The two singles (History Eraser and Avant Gardner) have been spinning 'round already for many months, attracting song writing and music industry award nominations, but the EP fills out with some new sounds for Barnett. The songs form a wave of an EP; the opening tune, Out Of The Woodwork, is a piano-driven slow burner with a country tinge (featuring Dan Luscombe on piano/guitar/vocals), building into the classic pop rock of Don't Apply Compression Gently and Avant Gardner, getting grittier on History Eraser (EP version) and David. The EP closes with Anonymous Club, a fragile heart breaker, highlighting Barnett's wit and vision, and her inclination towards the beauty in day-to-day human fragility. Ripper lyrics as usual!
