by Shuggie Otis
Shuggie Otis is one of those guys who should be alot better known than he is. A child guitar prodigy and the son of R&B legend Johnny Otis, he released 3 quite incredible albums in the early 70’s that unfortunately didn’t grab a big audience and his last one was in 1974! However, he’s now back on the road regularly and back with a new album! Well, sort of. This release collects his last album proper, Inspiration Information with a new collection of unreleased recordings between 1975 and 2000, Wings Of Love. The former fits into the category of lost classics. The album features a mixture of strong funky tunes such as the title track and Sparkle City with short interludes like Happy House and XL-30 which probably confused alot of people. It’s a grower but completely worth persisting with! Wings Of Love is less consistent, no doubt due to the songs being recorded over such a long period of time but it’s still worth checking out for songs such as Special and the epic title track. If you’re not familiar with Shuggie, this is a great place to start as it shows a fair overview of what he was and is capable of."
