Sigur Ros have been known in the past for their long, blissful and droney soundscapes. When the first single off Kveikur, ‘Brennisteinn’, was released recently, straight away I noticed that this was as far away from that as possible! It’s much heavier and darker than I’ve been used to from Sigur Ros but still retaining an overall epic beauty. That sound continues over the rest of Kveikur as well and it has to be said that it is a far different album than its predecessor Valtari which was only released last year. Only the final tune, ‘Var’, is similar and that’s the shortest song on the record! It’s a grower, mainly due to the new sound but well worth persisting with.
Highlights include ‘Stormur’ and ‘Rafstraumur’.
