PBS and Melbourne International Jazz Festival have joined up to present two intimate Artist Talks, hosted at PBS Studios in Collingwood Yards during this year's festival. At 6pm on October 22, MzRizk interviews London-born saxophonist Nubya Garcia (Booked Out), and at 3pm October 24, Mike Gurrieri interviews Brandee Younger (TIX).

Entry is free, but RSVPs are essential.

Nubya Garcia 6pm Tuesday October 22, 2024 - BOOKED OUT

London-born saxophonist, composer and bandleader Nubya Garcia has re-defined what it means to be a jazz musician in the modern era.  The epitome of musical creativity, she fuses elements of jazz, dub, R&B and classical styles together with her commanding tone and fierce compositions.
 

The multi-award-winning tenor saxophonist has blazed a distinctive trail in the recent UK jazz explosion. Championed by legendary BBC broadcaster Gilles Peterson and recognised as UK Jazz Act of the Year at the 2019 Jazz FM Awards, Garcia has since received a nomination for the prestigious Mercury Prize (2021) and regularly performs to capacity crowds at festivals such as Glastonbury, Love Supreme, Montreux and Newport Jazz Festival.

Join us as this innovative musician, producer and composer shares her perspective on pushing artistic boundaries, her creative journey and shaping the future of jazz.

Sonically innovative harpist, Brandee Younger, is revolutionising the instrument for the modern era—working relentlessly to stretch boundaries and limitations for harpists.
 

From collaborating with cultural icons including Pharaoh Sanders, Ms. Lauryn Hill, Drake, Robert Glasper, Charlie Haden, Makaya McCraven and The Roots, to making history as the first Black woman to be nominated for a GRAMMY Award for Best Instrumental Composition, Younger is consistently recognised as the premier harpist of her generation.

Join this pioneering jazz harpist as she reflects on her career, creative process and the future of her instrument.
