PBS presents this restored recording of influential improv-jazz project Musiikki Oy for the first time in more than 30 years. Led by legendary drummer Ted Vining, the band are captured in full flight at RMIT’s Glasshouse Theatre back in 1985.
Tune in to Dizzy Atmosphere on Sunday as Gerry Koster chats with Ted Vining about Musiikki Oy, the collective of musicians who performed in the project, with reflections on bassist Barry Buckley who sadly passed away just on ten years ago.
The recording features:
Ian Chaplin - alto and soprano saxophones
Peter Harper - alto saxophone and bass clarinet
Craig Steffenson - tenor saxophone
Tony Paye - acoustic bass and French horn
Ted Vining - drums
With guests Bob Sedergreen, piano and Barry Buckley, bass.
In the words of Vining: “12 months later business brought me back to live in Melbourne, Peter Harper went to London to study with Evan Parker and the remaining Oy's followed me to Melbourne for the VCA Improvisation Course.” Check out this landmark 1985 recording before everything changed.
