by Night Terrors
Listening to the Night Terrors’ new album you could be mistaken for thinking that the year was 1973 and you were actually listening to the start of a Dario Argento horror movie. The album, full title Pavor Nocturnus: A composition for Grand Organ, theremin, electronics and percussion is an achievement in itself, beautifully working electronic synth sounds in with the theremin and grand organ. In fact it was their performance last year supporting Italian prog group Gobiln (who wrote the score for Argento’s film Suspira) that lead to the commission to make an album on the grand organ. Listening for a second time, you start to realise that there are noticeable juxtapositions in sound and form the whole way through – the modern instruments with the grand organ built back in the 1920s, and the religious associations of the organ sound moving with the Night Terrors’ gothic rock beats. There is so much that makes this album really interesting, and Miles Brown’s mastery of the theremin just takes the sound to a new level. Halloween couldn’t be a better night for this album launch! It's an all-encompassing sonic experience that should be had by any music lover who likes to be challenged.
