by Owen Campbell

Owen Campbell's brand new album "The Pilgrim” is arguably one of the best albums I've heard all year. Upon enquiring as to why I've never heard of the young Canberra native before - apart from plain head-in-the-sand ignorance - I discover that he's spent the better part of the last decade touring the world. Little wonder he has such a global following, this album is world-class. I'm told he's one of Australia's best slide guitar players - I couldn't tell you - I haven't been able to get past his soulful, gravelly voice and his seasoned and expressive songwriting. Reminiscent of Delbert McClinton, Ray Bonneville and Anders Osborne both in voice and genre, the album's second track "Leave It Alone" even sports a smattering of Tom Waits - always a deal sealer in my book. This diverse but cohesive blend of blues, roots, country and soul is second to none, it doesn't put a foot wrong.
