by Saint Jude
At the beginning of 2012, Saint Jude released their first full-length album. I hadn’t heard of them at that stage but it really stood out at the time. It featured 12 strong country rock type numbers reminiscent of The Band. As much as I liked it though, I felt that there was something more to come. Little did I know that the quintet hadn’t fully formed until after the album was written and produced so Saint Jude II (released just 18 months later) is the first with all 5 members involved and the difference is immense! There’s certainly a greater soul and gospel element (Only You I Need - one of the singles of the year!) mixed with rockers (Set Her Free, Afraid To Change), epic ballads (Lauralie, Remember) and even a Kinks cover! ('This Time Tomorrow')
Although I reckon that there’s still greater potential for a real classic album in them and this isn’t quite there, it is nevertheless another wonderful album in 2013 from a wonderful Melbourne band!
