As we continue to honour the legacy of David Heard we revisit the beautiful Studio 5 Live session recorded on Acid Country by Sal Kimber & The Rollin’ Wheel on 18 October 2011. You can hear the session in its entirety on October 2 on 5ft High & Rising with Myles O’Neil Shaw.
Originally hailing from the mountain valleys of rural Victoria, Sal Kimber grew up in a musical family, and discovered her passion for songwriting at an early age. In 2008 she formed her alt-country band Sal Kimber & The Rollin’ Wheel (with older sister Beth Kimber, Jacob Cole, Cat Leahy and Trent McKenzie).David Heard recognised Sal’s unique style and supported her from the beginning, in the same way that he supported so many local talents. Myles O’Neil Shaw writes:
‘It’s true to say that almost no one did more for the local roots music scene here in Melbourne than David Heard. Throughout his more than 40 years on PBS, he always championed local music. Almost every week he had at least one guest in the studio with him talking about their music and playing live. The strength of the local scene can be attributed to the wonderfully talented musicians we have here in our state and also to the support given to them by community radio in general. Announcers like David Heard did so much to bring the music directly to radio listeners. His immense contribution will be sorely missed but his legacy will continue on.
The 2011 Sal Kimber & The Rollin’ Wheel performance in Studio 5 took place shortly after the band released their second, self-titled album. Produced by Shane O’Mara who also plays on the album, the album was recorded at O’Mara’s Yikesville studio in Yarraville and contains contributions from Liz Stringer and the late Chris Wilson amongst others. The Studio 5 session perfectly captures the band’s soulful, playful and powerful live energy and is a splendid example of the seemingly effortless alt-country sound the band is renowned for.’
Tune in to 5ft High & Rising on October 2 for this special Studio 5 session.
