Yarra City Council is producing the Smith Street Dreaming, an afternoon of Aboriginal music, as part of the Leaps and Bounds Live Music Festival.
The Leaps and Bounds Live Music Festival runs from 5th – 21st July with a program that showcases Yarra’s iconic live music venues. The festival will include talks and tours, all ages’ events and workshops, tram sessions and gigs in numerous participating venues.
The Smith Street Dreaming is designed to promote awareness of Aboriginal culture and to encourage better relationships amongst the community on and around Smith Street. Yarra City Council is working in partnership with the Neighbourhood Justice Centre‘s Smith Street Working group which is led by Elders from the Aboriginal community and includes the following stakeholders: justice and outreach workers, Victoria Police, North Yarra Community Health Centre and the Smith Street Business Association.
Live acts: The event is programmed by Jason Tamiru and will feature well known Aboriginal musicians Bart Willoughby, Kutcha Edwards and Illana Atkinson and The Deans.
Streetscape: Members of the local community are being invited to develop a streetscape for the event that will include seating, heating and wet weather cover, as well as some artistic elements and a ceremonial fire. This process will be facilitated by architects from Here Studios.
A Welcome to Country and traditional dancers will open the site from 1pm with music kicking off at 2pm on the nose.
No alcohol will be available for purchase at the event and Smith Street Dreaming has a no alcohol policy.
A free BBQ will be provided by the Margaret Oats Food Van and the Collingwood Rotary Club who have been serving free meals on Stanley Street for many years.
