Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings - Soul of a Woman (PBS Feature Record)

Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings' final studio album, Soul of a Woman is a lush, orchestral masterpiece. A true testament to the life and career of Daptone's fearless leader and one of the world's greatest performers.

Though we’ll never again see her electric form shimmy across the stage, Sharon Jones continues to give us her soul and her music. She died nearly a year ago, but only now can we hear her final creation. Soul of a Woman captures a singer and a band at the peak of their power. Cutting one last time to eight-track tape at Daptone’s House of Soul studio in Bushwick, Brooklyn, the band endeavored to create a record that stretches the limits of their soulful sound in all directions, giving us both their rawest and most sophisticated recordings to date. A final statement by one of the most influential rhythm and blues voices of the 21st century.

Lazertits - Not Punk, Per Se (featured on The Breakfast Spread)

The debut LP from Melbourne tearaway punks Lazertits delivers sharp, catchy shout-along anthems. Fizzing garage rock excess and a get-on-with-it approach creates an inviting tangle of noisy melody - three guitars going full tilt over a thumping rhythm section. The album rings with the bright, punchy possibilities inherent in scrappy rock 'n' roll and hangs together on the cohesion and chemistry of the group. This is the sound of five friends having the time of their life.

In among the musical scrapes and bruises is an incredible lyrical ability to throw you deep into a tale. Bad for Business is the sound of a share house trading stories halfway through a slab of beer. Crying at the Tote perfectly captures that feeling of suddenly having a shit one when you're out somewhere that should be great. Nice Guys nails the endless queue of creeps lining up their unsolicited advice and unwanted advances.

Lazertits plant their flag, pop the corks and revel in the moment - just like they should.

Nick Brown presents The Breakfast Spread weekdays from 6am to 9am.
