Returning to Melbourne last January from three years studying and living abroad in Boston, USA, saxophonist and composer Stephen Byth brought together a group of seven of his favourite Australian musicians to play his new music (as well as some material from his acclaimed album, Reparations).
The performance at The Jazzlab, presented by the Melbourne Jazz Co-operative, was regarded by many as one of most outstanding gigs of the year. Ranging from sweeping orchestral soundscapes to explosive dynamic peaks, this material draws inspiration from influences ranging from John Coltrane to Béla Bartók to Andrea Keller.
He reconvened his Octet for a final performance on March 27, 2022 before returning to the USA. It was recorded by the MJC at The Jazzlab for later presentation on PBS and on Sunday, June 5 at 8pm, Dizzy Atmosphere will feature a curated package of highlights from the event.
The Octet featured Stephen Byth (tenor saxophone) with with Matt Jodrell (trumpet), Bernard Alexander (alto saxophone), James Macaulay (trombone), Julien Wilson (clarinet & bass clarinet), Kade Brown (piano), Sam Anning (bass) and, from Adelaide, Angus Mason (drums).
