Menagerie is the new spiritual jazz project from prolific Australian producer and songwriter Lance Ferguson, known for his acclaimed work under The Bamboos and Lanu monikers. For They Shall Inherit, Ferguson has assembled a top-shelf ensemble cast of musicians including the legendary U.S. vibraphonist Roy Ayers, Phillip Noy (saxophones), Mark Fitzgibbon (piano & Fender Rhodes), Eamon McNellis (trumpet), Rory McDougall (drums), plus vocals from Christin Deralas, Fallon Williams, and Ferguson himself.
Here they reference the sound of the classic music of Pharaoh Sanders, John & Alice Coltrane, Sun Ra, Don Cherry, and the labels Tribe, Impulse! and Strata East. Far from being simply a 1975 time capsule, this project is pushing forward; songs like ‘The Chosen’ sound like a live jazz take on some of the club music experiments of the 21st century.
