by CAVE

Cave, the Chicago quartet of new Kraut Psych rockers, give us Threace, their fourth album, on the record label Drag City.

Threace adds to the minimalism of Cave’s previous album, Neverendless, also on Drag City, by ladling a rather large helping of funk into the pot.

The epic first track ‘Sweaty Fingers‘, weighing in at 12 minutes, and the following nine-minute ‘Silver Headband’ dish up Cave’s trademark psyched-out, modern take on Neu. Tracks 3 and 4 ‘Arrows Myth’ and ‘Shikaakwa’ are where the funk kicks in. And it kicks in big time, enough to make you wonder if you’ve stumbled upon a lost classic Blaxploitation movie soundtrack. Track 5 ‘Slow Bern’ starts out like the chilled-out come-down track to settle you back to earth after such a wild ride, only to turn into one of the best pieces of late ‘70’s Kraut rock since Harmonia’s Deluxe.

Cave really show us what they can do on Threace. The writing, the hypnotic rhythm and the musicianship on this album set up enough tension to hold you riveted from start to finish. Neverendless was in many top 5 lists for 2011, including mine. Threace will be in even more.
