by Underground Lovers
Underground Lovers have always been critics darlings and a cult favourite ever since their first album, released in 1990. Although they never quite reached the heights of other aussie indie groups of the era, they’ve always been on the radar. After a long hiatus for most of the 2000’s, they got back together for a one-off performance at Homebake in 2009 which eventually resulted in more live shows, a retrospective compilation and finally, their first studio album in over a decade, ‘Weekend’. What really stands out on ‘Weekend’ is the energy. Songs such as ‘Can For Now’, ‘Signs Of Weakness’ and ‘Riding’ show this off in spades but it’s the album’s closing tune ‘The Lie That Sets You Free’ which i think is the highlight. Over 7 mins of hypnotic, driving epicness! It sounds like the Underground Lovers never left us!!
