by Brighter Later
Brighter Later is essentially the solo project of Jaye Kranz, and The Wolves is her debut release. With a little help from friends across the instrumentation (including Shane O'Mara, and Simon Bailey of Pony Face) The Wolves was self-produced and recorded DIY in her church home in Yarraville. A background in radio and audio producing must hone an attention to detail, but in Kranz's own words, in self-producing this debut work "one of the advantages was not even having a rule book to throw out."
It's a singer-songwriter album, but built on detailed beds of near-electronic soundscapes. And having spent time in New Orleans, maybe there's a natural hint of Mary Gauthier to Kranz's vocals. Or, as the synths and guitar-echoes swirl in an almost tangible mist, maybe it's imagined. This album really enjoys repeated plays.
