IWD 2022 Listen Back

Once again PBS celebrated women in our community with a special 24 hours of broadcasting on International Women’s Day, Tuesday March 8. We brought a mix of genres across the day from committed members of the PBS family - regular announcers, fill-in broadcasters and previous show presenters.

We kicked off at 12am with one of Australia’s leading young musicians – composer, saxophonist and ensemble leader Flora Carbo leading our celebration with her own particular take on jazz, improvisation and post-classical composition. Through the night we then handed over the decks to DJ Niamh and Anita Michalski, for 4 hours of beats and chilled electronica. 

As night became day a PBS favourite returns with Adriana (Opalakia) joining Bridget (Synthesize Me) to spread some IWD breakfast. The vibe will be upbeat as our celebrations kick in.  At 9am one of Melbourne’s most respected jazz vocalists Fem Belling takes care of business until MzRizk gets on the decks for Boogie Beat Suite from 11am ‘til 1pm. Rizky is a Melbourne institution and an unstoppable force behind countless events, festivals and club nights. 

Right in the heart of International Women’s Day on PBS we have a true trailblazer of roots radio. Jan Dale is the only non-American broadcaster to ever be nominated for the International Bluegrass Music Association Broadcaster of the Year. Recently Jan was also the very first PBS broadcaster to go live from our new studios at Collingwood Yards, exactly 20 years after she did the last PBS program in St Kilda. 

There’s always lots of love during IWD and from 3pm to 5pm DJ Lady Soul dons the headphones, sharpens the stylus and shares the good vibes through the early afternoon. Flying in from her new home in Tasmania where she is part of the Dark Mofo team, Rosa Coyle-Hayward returned to PBS to take care of your drive-time radio journey home with lots of great local content. 

As the sun set Claire Dickson will joined us for some Good Company from 7pm to 8pm. Having spent time in the insomnia slot and a lengthy stretch on The Breakfast Spread, in 2021 Claire made a welcome and extremely popular return to a weekly slot. 

At 8pm DJ Sarita Ryan stepped into the studio and bringing it all home from 10 until midnight was musician and regular fill-in broadcaster Lisa Gibbs. Lisa’s knowledge of underground Australian (and international) post-punk, punk, alt-pop and indie music is extraordinary and it was the perfect way to bring International Women’s Day on PBS to its conclusion.
