PBS is saddened to learn of the passing of Chris Bailey.
As singer with The Saints Bailey’s standing in the history of Australian music is legendary. It’s widely acknowledged that The Saints’ debut single (I’m) Stranded (1977) defined the sound of Australian punk and influenced a generation of young bands the world over.
In the early years of this radio station there were probably no bands played more often, and no groups more revered by PBS broadcasters than these rowdy punks from suburban Brisbane.
“Devastated to hear of the passing of Chris Bailey from The Saints at the age of 65. I regard the first three Saints albums; (I'm) Stranded, Eternally Yours and Prehistoric Sounds as the blueprint of Australian punk in the late 70s. The single '(I'm) Stranded' was the first Oz punk 7'' single and at the time a rallying cry to all disaffected youth around the country and around the world that a change in music was upon us. The song, '(I'm) Stranded' still holds up today. The song writing of Chris Bailey and Ed Kuepper on the first three The Saints albums was brilliant. R.I.P. Chris Bailey.” PBS' Prince of Darkness.
Sunglasses After Dark will be paying tribute to Chris and the first three The Saints albums in particular, plus some special bits and pieces from Chris' extensive catalogue on Thursday 14 April at 8pm.
