Victorian-born, internationally-acclaimed trombonist Shannon Barnett has been based overseas since 2011, firstly in New York City and more recently in Cologne, Germany, where she performed for several years with the renowned WDR Big Band.
In 2019 she became Professor for Jazz Trombone at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz in Cologne and found time recently between semesters to visit Melbourne and perform with long-time collaborators, double-bassist Sam Anning, drummer Raj Jayaweera from Spain, as well as Adelaide-based guitarist Hugh Stuckey. Together they interpreted a variety of compositions from each and the two sets recorded on the night will be broadcast as they happened.
During the MJC's 40th anniversary year, this another of a number of exclusive MJC recordings to be heard on Dizzy Atmosphere through 2022 and marks a return to the close relationship between PBS and the MJC. In some respects that relationship comes full-circle, as several of the concerts in the inaugural 1983 MJC Series were recorded by PBS and broadcast at the time.
Tune in to Dizzy Atmosphere Sunday May 1 from 8pm.
