Sam Amidon is a modern folk singer who continues his tradition of re-arranging traditional folk songs on his 4th album Bright Sunny South.
The American-born but London residing singer/songwriter has a unique ability to match beautiful vocals with creative instrumentation to breathe new life into old songs. Sam recorded the album in London working with English engineer Jerry Boys. Sam plays banjo, fiddle and guitar on the album.
The album features a beautiful version of the Tim McGraw track ‘My Old Friend’, a stripped down version of the traditional Irish song ‘Streets Of Derry’, there are two tracks that feature the jazz trumpeter Kenny Wheeler, and there’s even a Mariah Carey cover on the album, which is definitely worth a listen.
Sam’s mother and father are both musicians and his brother Stefen is a drummer with the Sweetback Sisters. Sam is married to English singer Beth Orton.
The album ‘Bright Sunny South’ has a Nick Drake / John Martyn feel to it and if you’re planning a long drive somewhere you should definitely take a copy of this CD with you. It’s out through Nonesuch.
