Synth-pop is like a ray of musical sunshine into an otherwise dull and grey day, and Melbourne’s Pikelet certainly deliver on the dreaminess with her new album Calluses.
It’s not all meadows and flowers though – the 9 track release also delves into more ominous organ sounds, slow melodies and echoing vocals – making this album perfect for any mood and complementing the sunniest of days, and the rainiest of winters – encompassing the sunshine-rain-wind-hail-drizzle-sunshine-overcast days we all-too-often experience in Melbourne.
Evelyn Morris’s voice floats over the top of the tracks, singing beautifully crafted lyrics that are a little hard to understand sometimes, as is the case sometimes with drifting, synth-sounding vocals, but paint pictures in our minds that are a far cry from any cliché – “This was the story I was told back when I was a little girl, about a crazy old lady who keeps her friend in a jar…and she’s keep them on the shelf in little lines”.
Released through Chapter Music, who also looks after the likes of artists such as Fabulous Diamonds and Standish/Carlyon, Calluses is an album will get you feeling happy, dreamy, a bit chilled, perhaps a little melancholy, and possibly craving pancakes afterwards.
