Hip Hop may have begun on the streets of New York but lately it has taken up residence in Collingwood as eager BBoys and BGirls prepare for the relaunch of Cypher Etiquette. Hip Hop culture has swept around the world over the past 30 years and into the hearts of musicians and performers everywhere. While Hip Hop may have begun as an expression of societal issues, it has evolved into many different forms over the years and mostly due to ‘gangster-rap’ has become a largely negatively-stereotyped art form. Graffiti artists in particular who belong to this underground urban culture have received their share of negative attention. Yet the Hip Hop Community that exists in Melbourne is largely misunderstood.
Cypher Etiquette brings together a Hip Hop Dance workshop, with Graf Demonstrations, DJaying, Emceeing, Cypher Time and Breaking and Freestyle competitions. It fosters a no smoking and no drinking policy and gives youth in the community the chance to learn about Hip Hop Culture through talented and positive role models. This Hip Hop Party features prominent Australian Hip Hop icons such as DJ D-Flexx, Emcee Yung Phily, Graf Artist Jase RDC and BBoys Pepito, Nasa and Andre. The event is also an opportunity for Breakers and Freestylers to showcase their talent and compete for up to $350 in cash prizes.
Cypher Etiquette will be held on Sunday 7th August at The Crom in Collingwood. Tickets are $5 and if you bring a new friend they get in for free. There are also ‘sessions’ workshops held every Saturday at The Crom by resident Hip Hop Dancers SugaGill and Pepito.
MC Talib Kweli once said “Hip-hop is a vehicle” and we at Cultural Infusion invite you to come along for the ride.
