The Lorne Business & Tourism Association is pleased to announce tickets are now on sale for the inaugural Lorne Festival of Performing Arts; 50’s – 60’s Culture By The Sea from September 9 – 11, 2011.
Festival goers will experience a wonderful line up of shows, including the Opening Night Cabaret, the Saturday Swing Spectacular, swing dance and circus workshops. Guests will fill their weekend with ticketed and free events, including music, visual arts, historic photographic exhibitions, burlesque, circus, DJs, parties, poetry, storytelling and more!
Former producer and programmer of The Famous Spiegeltent, Monique Harvey has been commissioned to program and provide the artistic vision for the festival. “I am incredibly excited to be involved in what will be a remarkable event,” said Monique. “The high calibre of acts involved will create a vibrant and fun filled weekend for all who attend. The support of the local community in Lorne will also contribute to what I see as being a wonderfully inclusive event that hopefully will continue for years to come.”
Some of the countries’ most respected artists from various genres will join the community of Lorne, such as Melbourne Surf Western legends, Mikelangelo and the Tin Star feat. St Clare; the sensational and sassy Go Girl Gadget Go Go Dancers; local jazz and burlesque star Jessamae St James, Circus Trick Tease, Lilikoi Kaos, The Shuffle Club, Swing Patrol, Victoriana Gaye, Ghost Mutt, The Beachniks, Hi Ball Burlesque, Flap! and more.
Check out the Surf & Beach Culture Forum and Exhibition hosted by Lorne-based surf archivist Murray Walding – a couch-style talk session with some of Australia’s surfing icons including Wayne Lynch (one of the most lauded surfers in Australian history), Gail Couper (ten time Bells Beach Classic winner and much respected voice for women’s surfing), Don Hirst (guitarist and leader of Melbourne beat group- The Spinning Wheels) and Brian Singer (co-founder of Ripcurl). See the Lorne-Airey’s Inlet P-12 School VCAL Students historic photographic exhibition of Lorne during this post-war period and enjoy street performances and tableaux vivant.
The festival is an exciting development for the community of Lorne, which already possesses a strong arts calendar with The Falls Music & Arts Festival (December 2011) and the Lorne Sculpture Exhibition (October 2011). Residents will be welcoming visitors to all the festival events with a number of local businesses opening up their venues for performances. Visit Mantra Erskine Beach Resort, Ba Ba Lu Bar, QDOS Arts, Bistro C at The Cumberland, The Beach Pavilion, The Grand Pacific Hotel and various other locations throughout Lorne to be part of the action.
