What The Folk!
Officially, it is "World Folk", whatever that means. Folk music is hard enough to explain without adding World to it too! I think of "World" music as a fusion of music from all different parts of the planet, often combined in unusual but intriguing ways. In the introduction to my show I say 'this is folk music for people who didn't even know they liked folk music'. So it's mostly not 60's style acoustic guitar flower power or songs of the revolution. But then again....occasionally it is! I do like unusual lyrics that express feelings and experiences that we all have. Folk music is often perceived as being really clichéd, and indeed it often is. I try to avoid that.
There's a lot of Celtic music and, as I'm lucky to have Canadian citizenship as well as Australian, also plenty of music from North America. But I'm also keen on Latin and African music and folk music from Europe. Australian music gets a go too, of course, mostly acoustic and also local gypsy bands.
I try to pass on the music that I love to people who might also appreciate it.
