HEXDEBT have made a thundering entrance into the Melbourne punk and garage scene since their formation in a Brunswick lounge room in June last year. Their songs grip a tension between tightly refined technical prowess and chaotic discordance, executing the balance of both with ferocious confidence.
Guitarists Agnes Whalan and Aife Larkin converse in a style of disparate but complementary elements; Whalan’s reverberated picking and Larkin’s searing electrical current intertwine in immaculate synchronisation. Bassist Isobel D’Cruz Barnes fingerpicks heavily articulated lines that sustain a strong momentum in each track, with Lucy Fry unleashing a commanding rhythm on drums.
Each member contributes to the vocals lines, fronted by Whalan screeching poeticisms about betrayal, conflict, property and bodily ownership, shooting down their transgressors with torrents of blazing condemnation. The result of all of these elements is an absolutely unmitigated force, and has earned them performance slots at Wetfest, The Bank Records Launch, and supporting all types of punk rock legends around town.
