From the very start, PBS 106.7FM has led the way for all Melburnians to experience live music with broadcasts from the back of the Prince of Wales in St Kilda more than 30 years ago.

That strong live music tradition continues with PBS Studio 5 Live, weekly live performance broadcasts from the PBS studios. The vibe is grassroots, with an unwavering commitment to quality and diversity.
The sessions consist of a half hour live set and a short interview with one of our announcers.

For info on upcoming PBS Studio 5 Live performances, tune in to the Breakfast Spread’s Studio 5 Archive on Tuesdays at 7.15am or follow us on Twitter @pbsfm. You can also keep your eyes on this page for info on what's ahead, watch, or listen back through the on line audio archive.

The Studio 5 alumni includes Kylie Auldist, Billy Bragg, Arrested Development, The Dirtbombs, Heavy Trash, The Drones, Eddy Current Suppression Ring, Screaming Females, Terry, Xylouris White, John Foxx, Joe Chindamo, DJ Baku, Eilen Jewel, Syl Johnson, The Bamboos, Justin Townes Earle, Fred and Toody and Mista Savona.

The Meanies

The Meanies have always been outlandishly funny - this never stood in the way of their musical talent as Australia's punk-rock stalwarts. As longstanding PBS favourites, they have visited the station in various capacities over the years, always bringing their special brand of high energy wit and humour to the airwaves. You can hear this in their early sessions on PBS, like their 2007 Studio 5 Live session, which represents the band’s original energy, playful on-stage banter, sharp wit and even sharper riffs.

John Scofield is without doubt one of the true legends of jazz guitar.  For almost 50 years ‘Sco’ has been recording and releasing music, and touring the world’s stages both as band leader and as the ultimate ensemble player.  His list of collaborators reads like a who’s who of 20th and 21st century jazz.

Iconic U.S. band Endless Boogie describe themselves as "two or three guitars, whatever amps you got, one wah pedal, one distortion box. The bass, the drums. Reluctant vocals." Yet they are much, much more. In their 25-year career so far, these psych-rock luminaries have not ceased to keep pushing boundaries in their sonic explorations and minimalist jams.

Melbourne band Cool Out Sun make Afro roots music, peppered with hip hop goodness and a sunny disposition. The supergroup is a cross-cultural enterprise that sees vocalist N’fa Jones (1200 Techniques), percussionist Nui Moon (Digital Afrika) and drummer/producer Sensible J (REMI, Sampa The Great) teaming up to create sultry beats and poetic commentary on a variety of social issues.
